When Feedback Isn’t Really Feedback

PO Communication Skills – Comic Agilé

The comic I chose connects well to the chapter on interpersonal communication because it shows how the way people communicate can shape the overall feeling in a relationship. In the comic, one employee tells another that she needs to improve her communication skills. At first, it sounds like he is trying to give helpful workplace feedback. However, by the end of the comic, it becomes clear that he mainly wants her to communicate his product decisions better for him. This creates a disconfirming communication climate because he is not really valuing her perspective or treating her as an equal part of the conversation. Instead of making her feel supported, his message makes her seem more like a tool for his own goals. This directly relates to the chapter’s idea that communication climate is the overall emotional mood between people, and that confirming or disconfirming messages can affect interpersonal relationships.

This comic also relates to my life and work environment because I have seen situations where feedback is not really meant to help someone grow, but is instead used to make them do someone else’s work more effectively. In school or at work, communication is better when it is respectful, clear, and genuinely supportive. If someone gives feedback in a one-sided way, it can create tension and make the other person feel unappreciated. This comic reminds me that strong interpersonal communication is not just about speaking clearly, but also about creating a positive and respectful climate between people.
