From Smoke Signals to Smartphones

Evolution Of Communication Infographic in 2025 | Infographic, Timeline ...

The image I chose is an “Evolution of Communication” infographic. It shows different forms of communication throughout history, including smoke signals, carrier pigeons, the telegraph, the telephone, radio, and modern technology. What is happening in the image is basically a timeline of how humans have found new ways to send messages across distance and time.

This connects directly to Chapter 4 because the chapter explains the history of communication study and how the field changed as society changed. One important idea from the chapter is that communication has been studied for thousands of years, starting with early thinkers like Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, and Aspasia. During the Classical Period, communication focused heavily on rhetoric, public speaking, persuasion, and audience awareness. Over time, especially after the printing press and later technology, communication study expanded into areas like media, politics, education, public opinion, and mass communication.

This image also relates to my own life because communication technology affects almost everything I do. At school and work, people use emails, phones, texts, and online platforms to share information quickly. As a paraprofessional, communication is important because messages between teachers, students, and staff need to be clear. The image reminds me that even though the tools have changed, the purpose is still the same: people are trying to share meaning, persuade others, and stay connected. Chapter 4 shows that communication is not just something we do every day, but something that has developed over history into an entire field of study.
